Got Stress?

Stress Management for Today's Writer

Facilitator:  Serena Wadhwa Psy.D., LCPC, CADC

Workshop Syllabus

In today's demanding times, writing can be stressful for many. Particularly when other commitments and obligations get in the way. This workshop explores some basic facts about stress and how it can affect you. Participants will leave this skill-building workshop with tools that will enable them to identify and work through stress, burnout and compassion fatigue to be more effective in their lives and still write. Students will have the opportunity to examine where they are currently, in terms of what’s optimal stress and learn 12 different strategies to implement to better combat stress.

Week 1 Setting the Scene

This session focuses on a general overview of stress, the effects of stress and the progression of stress when not managed. We will also explore where your stress levels are and how this may be affecting your writing. Signs and symptoms of stress will also be covered.

Week 2 Basics and Relaxation Techniques

This week will be devoted to three basic strategies to managing, reducing or eliminating stress and four relaxation techniques. Participants will have assignments relating to online research and practicing specific techniques described.

Week 3 Restructuring Techniques

We will review and work on restructuring thoughts and elements of your environment. Specific assignments will be provided and reviewed as these are implemented.

Week 4Additional Techniques and Wrap Up

Finally, the last week will cover the remaining strategies. You will also be developing a stress management plan and schedule to help integrate the information from this workshop.
