WRITING THE HERO’S JOURNEY PART
II Facilitator: Kevin Miller Workshop Syllabus Ever wonder what all good stories—from The Lord of the Rings to The Cider House Rules—have in common? It’s the shape of the Hero’s Journey, taking him or her from the ordinary world, to the special world, to the inmost cave, and back again. Drawing from Joseph Campbell’s studies into the foundations of myth, part II of this workshop will help you use this classic storytelling structure to infuse your stories with direction, purpose, and structure. Week 1: Facing Death On the way to fulfilling his or her destiny, every hero must face death in some form. This week will focus on stages seven and eight of the Hero’s Journey: the Approach to the Inmost Cave and the Ordeal, during which the hero faces his or her ultimate test. Week 2: Smash and Grab Once death has been overcome, it’s time to get what you came for. But you’ll probably have to fight to keep it. Thus, this week will focus on stages nine and ten of the Hero’s journey: The Reward and The Road Back. Week 3: Final Exam Eventually, the lesson of the Ordeal must be put to the test. That’s what stage eleven—the Resurrection—is all about. Week 4: Older but Wiser When the adventure is over, it’s time to go home. This week will wrap things up with the final stage of the hero’s journey: Return with the Elixir. Objective: Prerequisite:
